The Story:

In the 1950s Swiss architect, Pierre Jeanneret was commissioned to devise a series of chairs for civil servants working in the city of Chandigarh, the capital of India’s Punjab province. The teak-and-cane chairs, with signature “drafting compass” legs, were developed largely in collaboration with his cousin Le Corbusier, the legendary architect behind the utopian city.

Jeanneret didn’t just design chairs, of course. While Le Corbusier based himself in Paris, Jeanneret relocated to India, where he supervised all aspects of the construction of the massive Chandigarh project as well as designing a number of buildings himself. But it’s his remarkable furnishings that sat within the complex that is arguably his most tangible legacy.

Their durability would be put to the test decades later, when, as people gravitated to more contemporary designs, discarded Jeanneret chairs piled up across the city. Many were sold as scrap at local auctions for a few rupees and even ended up as firewood.
